March 30
The Bronck Museum is pleased to announce this year’s Olga Santora Women’s History Lecture, "Growing Discontented: Women Patriots and the Political Rhetoric of the Founding Era,” presented by Dr. Lawrence Howard. The lecture will be held on Sunday, March 30 at 2pm in the Vedder Research Library in Coxsackie.
Even before tea was dumped into Boston’s harbor in 1773, before shots were fired at Lexington and Concord in 1775, and before the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, concerned citizens participated in the political dialog taking place throughout the thirteen American colonies of British North America. This dialog, of course, led to the Revolution and eventually an independent nation. We often refer to these citizens as the Founding Fathers. But what about women Patriots?
Politics in the 1700s was normally reserved for men. But in this year’s Women’s History Month Lecture, Dr. Howard will share the story about how several women patriots influenced political ideas in revolutionary America, generating support for American political independence from Britain. And we will, as Abigail Adams wrote to her husband John in early 1776, “Remember the Ladies.”
The Greene County Historical Society established the Women’s History Lectures to honor the late Dr. Olga Santora, Past President of the Society. Olga was a tireless educator Principal of Coxsackie Elementary School, Professor at SUNY New Platz and a Greene County literacy volunteer. Above all she was ahead of her time in promoting and supporting the interests and aspirations of women in all walks of life.
The lecture will take place in the Reading Room of the Vedder Research Library located on the grounds of the Bronck Museum at 90 County Route 42, Coxsackie. The Olga Santora Lecture is free and open to the general public. For more information call 518-731-6490 or www.gchistory.org.
June 7
45th Annual Tour of Homes, 10 am to 4 pm. This year’s tour focuses on the Village of Athens. Tour sites span a full range of the settlement. Take a trip through time while you visit homes built in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Many sites are new to the tour, while some have been featured in the past. On this day only, through the graciousness of owners who have painstakingly restored and maintained their historic homes and the hard work of the Society’s volunteers, tour goers are invited inside to enjoy the homes.
Tour headquarters will be at the Zion Lutheran Church, 102 North Washington Street (Route 385), Athens. At headquarters, tour tickets as well as those ordered in advance can be picked up. Box lunches will also be available for purchase while they last. Off street parking is available in the church parking lot on Washington Street. The tour will be held rain or shine. Tickets are $30 the day of the tour and $25 in advance. Participants will receive a brochure with information about the sites along with a marked route map.
To reserve advance sale tickets, send a check payable to GCHS to: Greene County Historical Society, P.O. Box 44, Coxsackie, NY 12051. Advance sale ticket reservations must be received by June 2. The tickets will be available with your tour brochure on June 7th.
This is the Greene County Historical Society’s major fundraiser. Proceeds from the sale of tour tickets support the Society, the Bronck Museum and the Vedder Research Library.
